What are the procedures for berries to enter the foreign market?
(Summary)
The berry growers are expecting an increased crop of raspberries, blackberries and blueberries this season. It is expected that there will be an abundance of berries in the market at the peak of the season. Farmers are still largely dependent on distributors who bring the harvested berries directly from the orchards. But if the distributor does not arrive on time, the harvest will be spoiled. So many farmers are already trying to find the key market themselves. Relatively large farmers have also begun to think about exporting berries.
In order to export berries to foreign markets, local producers must take into account the requirements imposed by the importing country. Farmers will also need appropriate packaging material in order to transport the fruit and offer it to consumers. Each country has their own requirements.
According to information posted on the European Commission's website, fresh or frozen berries can be shipped to the EU once they meet all the requirements of EU law. This article explains requirements and procedures in details for Georgian farmers.
